History
Opening a new 80-room vineyard retreat in Palisade, Colorado, began with an invitation from Steve Smith, owner of Grande River Vineyards, to build a hotel somewhere near his winery. Steve was auctioning some of his grape vines, and the Wine Country Inn's owners were interested in buying.
The owners toured wine regions around the world: Napa and Sonoma, California’s Middle Coast, Tuscany and the Rhine River Valley in Germany. The owners came back with a variety of good ideas and began to form their plans.
Particularly appealing was the flavor of the simple Victorian farmhouse architecture in Napa and Sonoma. Palisade, Colorado, has a Main Street lined with Victorian gingerbread houses, so the owners chose to honor the history and culture of the area.
The hotel's architect created a style called “farmhouse vernacular.” The buildings imitate the clusters of farmhouse, barn and out-buildings of the Palisade area. To evoke this bygone era, the hotel is graced with wrap-around porches, gables and wood siding, rocking chairs and wicker furniture.
The hotel was constructed during winter 2007-2008 and opened its doors August 1, 2008.
In the words of the local small town newspaper, The Palisade Tribune, the hotel, "--quickly became a source of great pride for Palisade; and in December, it was named one of the five best hotels in the nation for a vineyard wedding."
